VOLUNTEER MENTOR DESCRIPTION

POSITION:  Kinship Mentor

PURPOSE:  Healthy role modeling and companionship with a child

DUTIES:

• Responsible for initiating weekly contacts with a child
• Meet consistently; contact child with changes in planned meetings
• Regular contact/ follow-up with the Kinship staff, sharing concerns, highlights and suggestions

SKILLS REQUIRED:

• Dependability and enthusiasm
• Variety of interests
• Transportation and time once a week to spend with a child
• Non-judgmental attitude and unconditional acceptance
• Awareness of differences

TIME REQUIRED:

• 1 to 2 hours per week
• Time can vary according to the contact/activity

TIME WORK IS DONE:

• After school hours or on weekends
• Negotiable with the Kinship kid and parent/guardian

LENGTH OF TIME COMMITMENT: One year minimum

TRAINING PROVIDED:  Ongoing support and consultation with staff through orientation, follow-up calls, e-newsletters, and sessions for mentors

SUPERVISOR:  Directly responsible to Kinship coordinator
